A miniature oil paintings exhibition featuring the art of Juli Adams, a Seattle based painter. Beautiful portraits in miniature with custom frames
This spring the focus is on miniatures
The theme is Effervescence
Bubbles, like life, are temporary. Dynamic, enthusiastic, lively and just like that, gone.
They can only be captured, made eternal, through art. Effervescence in Miniature is all about the creative human spirit.
With so much adversity and hardship in the world, I chose to focus on what human do best, invent and imagine.
Each piece comes with a custom, handmade Italian Roma frame.
These special paintings are not created in the same way as the painting a day pieces. I went back to my roots and used the same technique the Old Masters did, starting with a painstaking drawing, underpainting, and many many layers to create miniatures that catch the eye and draw you in.
There is a small collection of mid-size pieces as well, dimensions are listed under each painting.
Pre-sales open Sunday, April 28th.
Grand Opening May 4th, 3-9 pm
You can also catch the show Thursday, May 2nd during Seattle’s Art Walk, 6-10 pm

In the dark of the wilderness is the Druid. To come upon here is to witness not savagery, but the adroit movement of a mystical person with no fear of wild places. Attuned to her world, she hears, sees, and feels in ways we have long since lost.

The smallest known place where 'attraction' occurs is molecular. I imagine witnessing this place, the place where things begin. I’ve wondered, my whole life, what attracts us to something. Why do we love what we love? The answers may be too small to see, but they certainly aren’t too small to feel.

We know now that our thoughts change the shape of our brain. What if this were an outward expression? Imagine, on any regular day, morphing into the shape of a feeling. They are rarely, if ever, just one sensation. They are complex, nuanced and multitudinous; they happen all at once. Perhaps they are part sea creature, part bird, familiar, and also alien.

We are shaped by the human world we live in. We can step back and see this world for what it is, an invention. Everything in this realm began as an idea, and those ideas became real. We are master inventors. How we live in this human world, what we believe and how we behave becomes as real as as how we see it. The term ‘reinventing yourself’, your viewpoint, is a powerful tool.

Into the Blue is flipping the script from ‘out’ of the blue. There is magic in turning towards the unknown, going into it, and seeing what’s there. This is the in-between place, quiet and filled with possibility. It’s difficult to navigate a busy mind, but behind that ‘mind’ is the place where we can hear and feel more clearly.

The Burning Mystery is both personal and universal. The biggest answers to 'why' are within. Like an internal fire, what we seek to know is our connection to the great mystery, a spark in the void.

It’s pretty obvious that bubbles are a theme in this show. I love everything about them. They are temporary and delicate, the world but a tiny reflection on the surface. Thoughts are like that. Bubbling up, reflecting the world, and then popping out of existence.

Under the human mask Kali wears is the abyss: the formless void filled with potential. The surface western viewpoint of this deity is naked, blood thirsty and wild-haired: a force of sexuality and destruction. But we have failed to realize her true symbolic worth; illuminated consciousness. She exists beyond name, beyond form, beyond illusion.

What are we but representatives of our selves? The Dignitary of our energy, our viewpoint, our wisdom. Individually, we are the only one in command of the official expression of our unique selfhood. It’s the only true freedom we have. It’s also immensely powerful.
The idea is less about an americanized sense of individuality and more about self knowledge. If we don’t access ourselves, someone else will step in to do it for you.

Every living thing contains wisdom. In a way, all living things are our ancestors with the cycle of life, growth, and transformation. The psyche holds a similar capacity. Ideas must flourish and then fall away so that new growth has room to take root.

Discernment through observation is a quiet study. Whether it’s noticing the wind moving through leaves on a tree, or taking in another person’s face, we are constantly taking in our world. To notice things in, to observe, is to study things as they are. The astonishing beauty of this exploratory place is profound, and always available.
Like sound, our world is filled with the energies of people, ideas and emotions. We emit, and we receive. Love too, is a resonance. It’s an undercurrent of information that’s always there, always available.

Here, the voice of the Sea is transformed into a half human form emerging from the waves with all the power and vastness of the ocean with a message to us: she is here to reclaim her home. In our blindness and daily consumerism we destroy the very place that gave us life. But we are one and the same, and irrevocably tied.

Most people thing of shadow as darkness. In this piece, it is not. My shadow is my ally. I no longer take her for granted or shut down when she speaks. My shadow is my beloved, my friend, and what makes me real and human. We now work together, integrated, one.
Electryone was the greek goddess of the sun. It is thought that she might have also been the goddess of morning or 'waking from slumber’. Awakening in this case, is the awakening that occurs when the soul’s desire meets the conscious mind. The idea of ‘woke’ has become a negative and overused term, but to be awake to the self is a very different matter.

Hecate is a mythological figure symbolizing the realms outside or beyond the world of the living. To see the face of Hecate is to witness the great mystery. We can be dragged there by circumstances, or we can intentionally seek the crossroads and the wisdom of our ancestors.

The whole self is an integration of all our selves. In an NIH study, self-integration is described as ’critical to identity, the process of connecting experiences to the self occurs as individuals narrate events.’ In other words, the stories we tell ourselves. We are composed of those stories.

'Prohivito in Altum' is translated to 'Launch forth into the deep'. Not only is a character in the act of launching himself into the deep, there are also characters who are already there, examining what lies in the caves of the deep. To me 'the deep' symbolizes our deepest, inner selves.

Mining is one of the scariest occupations I can imagine. I am fascinated and creeped out by miners of the past. I wonder at the lives they lived, the risks they took; all for the almighty dollar. Also the sad ugly scars they leave in the service of commerce. One begets the other.

I love cities. They scare me, enrapture me, energize me. I also love the forest, where I feel most at peace. Sometimes I need to get to the edge of a city, in a metaphorical way, to have distance so that I can breathe and see manmade things from a distance. This perspective helps to center me.

Ingrid looks very pleased, and perhaps a little afraid to move or she might scare the giraffes.
I painted this after a trip to Burning Man. Out there on the playa, anything is possible. There's no other way to explain it other than being there. It was my favorite year at Burning Man.
So yeah. Giant chickens. I found a book called 'Chickens!' at the University Bookstore. I opened it up and knew right then there that I would paint chickens. They're so ridiculous and beautiful. And they always look like they want to bite your head off. For these reasons I decided they'd make an excellent steed.
It's always kind of magical when dragonflies land on you.
Meaning I suppose that he guarded the waters with a more worldly eye.
Meaning her cultivation was derived from herself, and not her society.
A painting inspired by dreams, and also Carl Jung.

Moth & Bones is a deconstructed upcycled clothing line developed from a life time of designing garments.
I create one of a kind pieces with the same viewpoint as my paintings and sculpture. Fabric is after all, another medium, which I obsessively love and know very well. After creating a successful line of hats, I decided to take things further and make my clothing public.
Each garment is made from deconstructing clothes and sculpting them into something new.
The clothing is designed for ease and comfort with a Seattle vibe.
The inaugural trunk show will be held Sunday, February 25th. Click here for details: https://www.juliadams.com/new-events

A friend gave me her favorite cashmere scarf after it had been attacked by moths. She was heartbroken, but thought I could do something with it.
That scarf opened up something in me that I’ve wanted to share for a long time, and after it’s transformation I kept going.
It also inspired the name of the line, which seems fitting for my aesthetic.

One year I wanted a christmas tree but instead found this little light up tree at Grocery Outlet. I remembered I had a collection of broken porcelain dolls stashed away and decided to use them to decorate the tree. It’s been there ever since.
My sister in law gifted me these beautiful pots, passed down from her Grandmother. They live in my bedroom. One of my favorite things about them is the shadows they cast throughout the day, even at night.
My bedroom is a beautiful refuge. I make my bed every morning while my tea is steeping, and turn down the bed an hour before sleep. During the summer the wind has a whistling sound as it blows through the windows and the evening sun casts rainbows all over the walls from the prisms I hung in the window. It’s very dramatic.
These are the prisms in my bedroom window.
This arrangement holds information of my history. The ceramic pear was a gift from a friend years ago. I used it as a model when I was learning how to paint realism. As time went on this part of my bedroom took shape. The clock ticks, which drives some people crazy. For me, if you can be undisturbed by the ticking of a clock, you have a way out of repetitive thinking.
In my small bedroom is a huge painting. When I hung it there I realized that would be where it would always live. The ceramic sculpture didn’t come with that weird mask on it…that came later. it just fit the theme so well.
This gorgeous sculpture came from an artist in Sacramento. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. The LED’s surrounding it is like a crown of light that accentuates it’s stunning beauty.
This mantle was really ugly so I painted it glossy black. Every part of the house tells a story, and this mantle is a little history of me as an artist.
When my friend took these amazing pictures this bookshelf was a bit different but it describes my love of books.
The Studio is the most utilitarian part of the space. It’s all business.
I am obsessed with Italian leather journals. I have them made for me always with a ton of extra pages. Thin books are boring.
Inside the frame is a piece of a watercolor I painted almost 20 years ago. It’s not really like anything else I painted at the time, and still one of my favorites.
The Baba Yeti symbolizes for me an ideal Spirit Animal for sensitive people (such as myself) who have difficulty tuning out the emotions and energy of others. Yeti helps you cloak yourself in an aura of invisibility to restore vital energy.
This cat…is aware of every breath I take. We are completely attuned.
In my studio I have two areas to paint in. This is the desk for small paintings
My house is a place of peace. The serine face of Buddha captures my heart, and reminds me to breathe and listen.
This cat is the sweetest creature I know. He’s shy so some people think he doesn’t like them, but he’s just most comfortable with me.
I love my collection of cups. I use each one for a different reason.
I would’t have chosen yellow to paint my kitchen but when I moved in I really liked it. Yellow is so cheerful, especially in the mornings
I’ve always loved lab equipment. These came from a second hand shop in Madison, Wisconsin. They have really cool things there being a place with a lot of agricultural colleges.
Like… a lot. But the one topiary I got died. So, I painted it bright red.
I like to keep my odds and ends separate so I can see what I’m working with.
I like to choose what things relate before starting on a project

and added a filter to exemplify it’s other worldly-ness. The cool thing is that the colors are accurate. It was sunset when she took the shot.
Where stories are told, life is lived, and magic happens every day. Here at the Orphanarium we work hard to make sure each Poppet has good manners, learns new life skills, and is ready for adoption.
This is Preston, host of Poppet Radio. He spends his days playing in the woods when he’s not in the studio with his co-hosts Franklin and Evie.
Climbing tress is an essential skill and like most kids, Poppets have a rich imagination. Here, Preston and Lulu experiment with what it would be like to be koalas.
The world is a big place and Poppets love to explore it.
We teach outdoor skills early at the Orphanarium.
We keep logs of every Poppet that moves through the Orphanarium. So many have grown up here so we make sure to keep accurate logs of each kid before they move on to new families.
It’s not always easy to acclimate to a new home and new siblings.
Poppets are excellent ambassadors. Ma Peebs took these two on the trip of their lives. Here they are exploring Tiergarten in Berlin.
Poppets are very small and it’s important to keep track of them. It would be a very bad day if we lost one another in a foreign city.
We miss you Cosmo! How fun it was to talk about the Cosmos with you. Carl Sagan was your inspiration. Hopefully your new home has a telescope to see the stars.
A happy photo of Ren when she wore her glasses for the first time. We noticed she was bumping into things so we made sure she got an eye exam. It turns out she’s rather nearsighted.
Hangin’ out and shootin’ the poop on Ma Peebs big ol’ bed.
Conjoined twins are very rare, and we are always thrilled with the ‘double yoke’ orbs that produce them. Two heads are better than one!
Poppets LOVE stories, especially at bedtime.
Word gets out fast when someone gets adopted. It’s an exciting and also sad event.
Camping and being outdoors is good for the soul. Ansel is by the riverside having deep thoughts on this beautiful summer day.
It’s true, Ma Peebs spoils her Poppets with beautiful blankets and sleeping bags for campouts, a favorite pass time.
A Poppet’s first outfit is an important day. Lot’s of discussion goes into what colors they like, and what style of hat suits them best.
Ilsa discoverd a beautiful broach under the couch and she now wears it with pride.
Who doesn’t love forts? A friend of the Orpanarium built this gorgeous fort for a day by the river.
is the best way to wake up
Anouk watches clouds every single day
BE EATEN BY AN ALLIGATOR!
From sequin and fur bean bags to unique and stylish outerwear, Poppets do live in luxury.
Some of our Poppets like their alone time. The sound of rain on the window is so soothing.
Jealousy does sometimes happen, so it’s important to share the coziest spots.
If you look closely you will see a tiny acorn adorning Orland’s neck. That’s because he loves oak trees and hopes to live inside one someday.
When it’s gloomy outside we make sure the Poppets have things to do indoors. Sometimes it’s cooking classes or drawing lessons. Other times everyone gathers in the Rompus Room for play time and movies.
Have you ever wanted to know what life is really like in the Orphanarium? Listen in to Poppet Radio and find out.
Real Poppets, real talk.
